Jesus: The Captain Of Our Souls

A few summers ago my wife and I had the privilege of sailing on our first cruise. We flew to Seattle where we set sail for Alaska. It was a bit of a dream come true. The entire experience was pretty amazing, but one of the highlights was when the captain of our ship piloted the vessel into a narrow channel where we pushed away ice flows to see views that were nothing short of spectacular. The skill with which the captain directed the ship was incredibly impressive. I see drivers who can't fit their car between two lines in a parking lot and this man was moving a giant vessel amidst flows of ice with little room on either side. He had clearly been trained well.

In James we read that God uses the trials of life to help develop us into people who can demonstrate Christ in the most trying of circumstances. Although we're saved by grace at the moment of salvation, becoming strong men and women of God takes time. Fortunately, we're not on our own in this.

I'm sure our ship's captain must have asked plenty of questions when he was learning. James writes in his Epistle that we get to do this also.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you." James 1:5.

When the storms of life that mold us into the image of Christ leave us feeling lost we get to ask a generous God for advice.
Our ship made it through the fjord safely. Our Captain knew the way. The Captain of your soul knows where you're going as well. Trust His leading, and never forget Paul’s words to the church in Philippi;

being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

Following the Son,

James A Williams
