This Same Spirit Lives In You


Wasn’t Easter awesome?! It usually is. Church is packed, the music is special, the sermon extra powerful, there’s just no other day quite like it. We know Jesus is alive all year, but setting aside a time to celebrate sure does accentuate this truth.

A day removed from Easter we quickly get back to the daily grind. It sometimes doesn’t take long for all the excitement of the celebration to quickly be replaced by the routine of life. Challenges that were there last week can resurface, and we may wonder if we have what it takes to live in the power of the resurrection.

I have good news.

“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. Romans 8:11

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” II Peter 1:3

I was in an antiques store the other day looking at some rotary dial phones. I commented to the woman standing next to me how it didn’t seem that long ago when we used them. She replied by pointing out an old rotary dial pay phone and said her little girl had asked the store clerk what it was. He explained how it worked, and then said, “Before cell phones this is how you would call someone." A little boy behind her was listening and asked, "So you would carry that thing around with you?" Needless to say we all got a good laugh over his inquiry.

Phones have changed and he can’t grasp how communication occurred 20 years ago. In his way of thinking the phone has to be with you to make a call. Although not always true for phones, it is true with God. Fortunately we get to carry him around with us. We’re never alone, and the power of the resurrection is at work in our lives.

I’m on an airplane as I write these words. I fly a lot, yet still marvel at how 75 metric tons of metal can soar through the air at 32,000 feet. It takes a lot of power to get it off the ground. As amazing as this is it pales in comparison to the power needed to raise a dead body back to life. Don’t forget that this is the power within you. You have what it takes to live this life. Perhaps better stated, you have who it takes. And He’s with you always.

What’s In Your Cart?

On this day in 1939, Sylvan Goldman who owned the Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain got an idea. He was trying to think of a way for his customers to transport more groceries around his stores. He attached 4 wheels to the legs of a wooden folding chair, and then attached a basket to the seat. The shopping cart was born.  Before this shopping trips to the Humpty Dumpty or the Piggly Wiggly would be limited to what you could carry in your arms. I wonder if Sylvan’s original patent stated that one of the wheels was to either not spin or rapidly shake back and forth? It’s possible that this is some modern improvement on his original design. However it happened the carts keep getting bigger. When I bring my groceries to the check out counter I sometimes use the self check out. I don’t like the self checkout because the computer keeps telling me I put things in the bagging area when I didn’t. Mercy

We visited our nephew and his family last weekend. They have three boys, and witnessing their interactions brought back memories of both fun and difficult days of raising our boys. Sometimes when my boys were young I felt like all I did was discipline them. It seemed at times like we couldn't make it through a meal, homework, or even play time, without a fight breaking out, some inappropriate comment, backtalk, or a hundred other random things they could find to do to push their Mother and I over the line. I remember calmly saying things like, "I need for you to understand that I can feel anger welling up within me."  Sometimes this would result in corrected behavior, other times they would look at me as though I were speaking Chinese (I know this isn't actually a language, please don't write me a letter).
