Happy Pi Day!

“My friends think I’m as sweet as 3.14159265359...”

It’s Pi Day! It snuck up on some of you, but for my fellow numbers people it’s not to be missed. There will be some folks who will celebrate by eating Pie today, and I just might join in on the festivities. In America pie is a big hit. We eat it year round, but it’s especially big around the holidays.

The picture above is of Ava Archer, age 7, taking a quick breather as she giggles at her parents cheers during the pie eating contest at Lyman Orchards’ 10th annual Berry Festival. We love eating pie.

From a 1902 editorial in the New York Times we find this gem of a quote on pie.
“Pie is the American synonym of prosperity, and its varying contents the calendar of changing seasons. Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished.”

Wow! I guess I’ll have another slice!

It’s seems to me the author of that quote thought a little more highly of pie than he ought. Nonetheless, it is delicious and most of us have our favorite flavor. One of the unique things about pie is the blend of flavors and textures. Different fruits, sugars, and spices all blend together in a harmonious blend of deliciousness. Unity is a pretty powerful thing when it comes to pie.

It is in the church as well. The Psalmist declared it like this.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1

Of course even at church everyone isn’t always as sweet as pie. Working together in love is still pretty important though, and the end result is something beautiful. Is there someone in the body of Christ you’re not getting along with? It just may be time to join them for a slice of pie and work things out.

Following the Son,
James A Williams
