Black Jelly Beans, Calamari, And A Satisfied Soul

You don’t have to know me long to find out I love to eat. Being a foodie means whenever I’m in a new location I’m always hoping to find some creative spot to try something new.

As much as I enjoy food, I don’t normally care too much for candy. The exception to  this is this time of year. When those Cadbury Eggs come out I always want one. They’re so sweet, but there’s something about them that draws me back. And you can keep every color of jelly bean as long as you give me all the black ones. On more than one occasion I must admit to sitting and eating an entire bag of black jelly beans. (They’re great this time of year when they’re fresh picked straight off the vine!) If you don’t like black jelly beans we can’t be friends. I don’t have room for all your negativity in my life.

Ok, Ok, I know we all have different taste buds. Some people even claim to like avocados, but truthfully I think they’re making it up. Also no one really likes calamari. You could cut up shoe laces into one inch pieces, dip them in batter, and deep fry them and everyone would say it’s delicious. It’s not the squid you like. Look up a picture of a slimy squid. It’s disgusting. No one would eat that until they gave it an Italian name. The thing is, that’s just my opinion. We get to like different things.

There is one taste we can all agree on though, and it’s found in Psalm 34:8;

Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Just as a good meal really satisfies, time in the presence of God fills you up, and satisfies your soul. You know what it’s like to be really hungry and finally get to eat. This happens to me on Thanksgiving. Everything smells amazing, but we eat on a different schedule than normal. Once we finally eat it’s a meal that more than satisfies. Then we get to go back later for more.

Be sure to feed your inner person this week with what your soul truly craves. The presence of God, and the Word of God will nourish you and leave you longing for more. And if you’re not sure if you’ll like it, I encourage you just as the Psalmist did...have a taste.

Following the Son,

James A Williams
