Demonstrating Love
We’re only a few days away from Valentine's Day. People seem to either love or hate Valentine's Day. Kind of all depends on your current relationship status on Facebook. Regardless of what we think of the day, showing love is always a good thing. As believers love isn't something we just show to our "Sweethearts," but rather we are to demonstrate the love of God to everyone.
I read once of a survey where the neighbors of Christians were asked if there was anything that stood out to them about their neighbors. The number one response was, "they go to a lot of meetings." Of course, Jesus didn't say we would be known as His disciples by our busyness, but rather by our love for one another. I don’t want my neighbors to know me as someone who is out a lot. I want them to see the love and kindness of Christ.
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35
“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” I John 4:20
It’s raining steady in NY today, but during a previous snow storm I witnessed my neighbors fighting over where to put the snow. That may sound odd, but you can quickly run out of places in the city. The language was foul, and the moods even fouler. I can't deny that I'm sick of shoveling, but I put on my boots and went down to not only dig myself out, but to help them as well. I knew my presence would calm things, and I don't want to just be known for being busy. I want to be known for love. Let me be honest though. I'd rather show love by helping to mow their lawns than shovel their snow.
However you show it let’s be sure to demonstrate love this and every week to those around us.
Following the Son,
James A Williams
