Heeding The Call

This morning a pretty ominous warning went out in Hawaii. Turned out to only be a false alarm, but for a few tense minutes people scrambled for both shelter and further information.

Alarms and warnings are pretty important. I once heard a confusing one. I was in Heathrow airport in London when an alarm sounded and then instructions came over the intercom.

“Fire! Fire! Please move to a safe area of the airport!”

This announcement was repeatedly made. Trouble was we didn’t know where the fire was at so how could we know where to find a safe area? No one employed by the airport appeared in any way alarmed, but I couldn’t ask what to do since I don’t speak British. My wife and I just kept looking at one another asking, “Is there really a fire?”

The prophet Jeremiah spoke of an alarm as well. Of a warning sent by God to his people, and it was accompanied by no response.

"And I set watchmen over you, saying, 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet!' But they said, 'We will not listen’.” Jeremiah 6:17

We will not listen? How could that be their response to a word from God? We’re still pretty early into 2018. This is also a season of fasting and prayer for many in the church. As we’re getting ourselves focused let’s be certain we are heeding God’s word in our lives.

For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1

God’s word is a trumpet sounding in our lives. It’s never a false alarm, and so important for us pay attention. Let’s be sure we’re heeding the call.

Following the Son,
James A Williams
