Blessed Are The Peacemakers

Anyone who loves to quarrel loves sin.” Proverbs 17:19

What a statement! It almost seems too extreme...too radical. But this isn’t some sensationalized statement from the internet. It’s Scripture.

First things first it’s pretty important to note what the Proverb isn’t saying. It’s definitely not saying we can’t disagree. There’s a big difference between having a disagreement and loving to quarrel. An individual who thinks differently than you is not necessarily being contentious. At the heart of the matter is a contrast drawn in the Scriptures.

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.” Proverbs 25:24

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

The principle truth of Proverbs 25:24 applies to more than just a wife. If you’re an individual who is consistently difficult to get along with than people are better off without you. On the contrary, peacemakers are blessed.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

Think about it.

Who do I want to be? Someone who’s blessed or someone people are better off without? When it’s put like that the answer comes easy. This doesn’t change the fact that most of us at one time or another find ourselves in the rut of just sort of picking at others. We don’t necessarily choose this, but the battle is spiritual and our adversary sure doesn’t want us living in a place of blessing. When you find yourself having a tough time getting along with others it’s time to step back and take an honest assessment. Am I speaking the truth in love, or am being a quarrelsome person?

When the answer is the latter let’s refocus and move ourselves over with the peacemakers. That’s definitely the place to be.

Following the Son,

James A Williams
