Spirit Led Saints: Or Lessons From A Cheshire Cat
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where-" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
Most of you will remember this as a conversation from the fairytale Alice in Wonderland when Alice asks the Cheshire Cat for directions. It's an amusing account. How does one ask for directions when they don't have a destination?
All of us need to know where we're going. The great poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in his work, The Road Less Traveled,
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
The narrow path of following Christ is definitely the road less traveled. Jesus is clearly our goal as, "the author and finisher of our faith," Hebrews 12:2. However, on a daily basis we must continually make decisions to keep us on the path. Fortunately we're not on our own; we have the Holy Spirit as a guide.
Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit.
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." John 3:8.
That sounds a little strange at first. You can't tell where they're going? Let's just say life in the Spirit can be a bit unpredictable. Most of the miracles in Jesus' earthly ministry were interruptions to his schedule. The Holy Spirit was leading him though, so he kept having these divine encounters.
You and I will as well as we follow Christ and are led of the Spirit. Let's allow the Holy Spirit to lead us today. He'll keep us on the narrow road and we'll end up where God wants us to be. I can't wait to see where he takes us!
Following the Son,
James A Williams
