What's The Deal With Those Tiny Cups And Crackers
"This do in remembrance of me." These were Jesus' words when He instituted the Lord's Supper. Sadly, over the years communion often became a time of, "this do in remembrance of us." Communion was intended to be a time of remembering the life Jesus lived, and the price He paid. Jesus bore our sins in His body, paid for our healing, and by His grace we are saved through faith. The Bible teaches us that we all fall short, and that there is none righteous, no not one. Yet, that's not always what we reflect upon when we take the bread and the cup. Communion isn't a time to remember we fall short, it's a time to remember Jesus didn't. We don't come to the table to remember we sinned, we come to remember Jesus never sinned. Examining ourselves as a part of communion is good, and Paul reminds us to do this. Yet, none of us ever measure up. Our own righteousness is as filthy rags before a Holy God.
I'm so glad Jesus didn't say, "this do in remembrance of you." Instead we get to forget those things that lie behind, and press toward the mark resting in His sufficient grace. Let's remember Jesus when we come to the communion table. He paid it all. Remember also that His mercies are new this morning as well.
Following the Son,
James A Williams
