Life Lessons From A Cheeseburger

"He ran right into the cabinet!"
We were playing with our dog, Mr. Fox, and he took off running while looking back at me. The result was a collision with a piece of furniture. It was hard enough that there was that initial confirmation he was ok, followed by laughter.
"You have to look where you're going, Pup."

Looking in the right direction, or at the right thing, is pretty important in life.

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus." Hebrews 12:1-2.

Being focused on Christ is not only important in setting the course for our lives, it also directs our perspective. Check out this quote.

"If you can't see the sun you will be impressed with a street light. If you've never felt thunder and lightening you'll be impressed with fireworks. And if you turn your back on the greatness and majesty of God you'll fall in love with a world of shadows and short-lived pleasures." -John Piper

My Mother took my grandmother through the McDonald's drive through once to get her something to eat. The meal was simple. A cheeseburger and some fries. My grandmother, in her 90s at the time, bit the cheeseburger and exclaimed, "This is the best cheeseburger I've ever had in my entire life." The only way that could be true would have been if it was the only cheeseburger she had ever eaten in her entire life. She had been out of her home very little for some time though, and because of some health issues, had gone through a season where her food was all puréed. That will definitely impact your point of view.

Earthly pleasures have the same affect on us. If our eyes aren't fixed on Christ, and we're not experiencing the power of his presence in our lives, temporary things will seem a lot better than they really are.

Let's be sure we're not settling for McDonald's cheeseburgers in life when there's a banquet available. Keeping our focus on the majesty and wonder of God will keep us from settling for less than God really has for us.

Following the Son,

James A Williams
